Rebranding

Rebrand strategy before anything changes in public

Define the business case, protect valuable equity and decide what the new brand must accomplish before design and rollout begin.

What should a rebrand strategy include?

Rebrand strategy is the decision-making work that establishes why a brand needs to change, what the new direction should be, which existing equities should remain and how the transition will be managed. It connects the rebrand to business strategy so naming, messaging, design and launch decisions can be evaluated against a shared objective rather than personal preference.

The situation we usually walk into

Leadership has agreed that the brand no longer fits, but different stakeholders may be solving for different things. One person sees a dated identity, another sees a positioning problem and another is responding to a merger, growth plan or new audience. Creative work may be ready to begin before the organization has aligned on the actual job of the rebrand.

    What it costs the business

When the rationale is unresolved, every decision becomes subjective. Design directions are judged on taste, important equity is treated as disposable and the launch date begins driving the strategy. The organization can spend heavily on change while remaining unclear about what the change is meant to improve.

    • Stakeholders give different reasons for the rebrand
    • Design exploration has started before the position is settled
    • The business has not agreed on what customers should understand differently
    • No one has defined which parts of the existing brand must be protected

Signs rebrand strategy needs to come first

    • The reason for rebranding changes depending on who is asked
    • A merger, acquisition or new direction has created competing brand stories
    • The business has outgrown its category, name or original customer base
    • Creative options are being debated without agreed decision criteria
    • A launch date exists, but the strategic and transition plans do not

How we build a rebrand strategy

    1. 01

      Establish the business case

We clarify what has changed, where the existing brand is creating friction and what needs to be different after the rebrand.

    2. 02

      Audit equity and align stakeholders

We assess current recognition, associations, language and assets, then bring leadership to a shared view of what should be retained, evolved or retired.

    3. 03

      Define the new direction

We establish the audience, position, differentiation, architecture and central story the rebrand must express.

    4. 04

      Create the rebrand roadmap

We translate the strategy into a clear scope, decision criteria, creative brief and transition plan for naming, identity, messaging and launch.
