Brand Strategy

Brand positioning that gives the business a place to stand

We help businesses decide where they will compete, which audience matters most and what they can credibly ask to be chosen for.

What is brand positioning and why does it matter?

Brand positioning defines the place a business intends to hold in the mind of its customer. It identifies the audience, the relevant need, the value the business provides and the reason it should be chosen over a credible alternative. Positioning is a strategic choice, not a tagline. It gives the rest of the brand a clear direction to follow.

The situation we usually walk into

Positioning often becomes less clear as a business succeeds. New services are added, different audiences become important and the company starts describing itself through everything it can do. Each addition may be sensible, but together they make the story broad and difficult to remember.

    What it costs the business

When a business has no clear position, customers have to decide for themselves what makes it relevant. Sales conversations spend too long establishing the basics, marketing moves between competing messages and price becomes an easy way to compare similar-looking options.

    • Leadership and sales describe the business differently
    • The website leads with a long capability list
    • Marketing changes direction from one campaign to the next
    • Buyers understand what you do but not why they should choose you

    Signs your positioning needs work

    • Two leaders give different answers to “What are we best known for?”
    • Your closest competitor could use most of your website copy
    • The strongest reason customers choose you appears late in the sales process
    • New services have been added without a clear relationship to the core offer
    • Referrals understand the business better than the website explains it

    How we build the position

    1. 01

      Understand how the business wins

We look at the offer, commercial model, ambitions and existing customer evidence to understand where the business creates the most value.

    2. 02

      Read the market

We assess the category language, the alternatives customers consider and the areas where competitors have become difficult to tell apart.

    3. 03

      Make the strategic choices

We define the priority audience, relevant need, competitive frame, value and proof. Where more than one direction is credible, we make the trade-offs visible before a decision is made.

    4. 04

      Apply the position

We show how the chosen position should shape the website, sales narrative, brand messaging and future marketing priorities.
